Can we make a reaction with sugar?

Science Experiment

How do we use science to learn about the world?
Question/Aim	Can make a chemical reaction using just sugar as an ingredient?
Hypothesis	No because we will need something else.
Equipment	Sugar, stick, candy floss machine
Method	Heat up the machine.  Put some sugar into the inside bowl.  Watch what happens.  Collect floss from sides of big bowl with a stick.
Testing	We tested this as a whole class.
Results	We made candy floss from the machine.
Conclusion	The sugar heats up and melts.  This is spun really quickly and comes out the small holes, so reacts with air to make long spider like webs of sugar that is fluffy.
What might happen next, I wonder…?	We wonder what would happen if we add different food colours? I wonder what might happen if we squash the floss?

Wonderful World of Science

This term our inquiry topic is 'Wonderful World of Science'

We have been doing lots of little experiments as immersion (our base camp).  These are just some of them.

Science Experiment

How do we use science to learn about the world?
Question/Aim	Can we make raisins dance?
Hypothesis	No because raisins can’t dance.
Equipment	Raisins, lemonade, cup
Method	Put lemonade into a cup. Put some raisins in the lemonade and watch.
Testing	We tested this as a whole class.
Results	The raisins bobbed up and down in the lemonade like they were dancing.
Conclusion	The bubbles in the lemonade stick to the wrinkles on the raisins.  This causes them to lift up to the top.  Then the bubbles pop and they go back down.
What might happen next, I wonder…?	We wonder if this would work using different dried fruit. Would this work using a different soft drink?

Writing in Room 3

This term we have been trying to include different words into our writing to make it more interesting.
We have been learning about similes and we have been practicing writing them.

Commotion in the Ocean - Posters

Yesterday we worked with our buddy class, Room 11.  We had to tell them the information we knew about our sea creature. They helped us do some more research and then created a Poster using Google Draw.  Here are a selection of Posters.  Come and see the rest on our wall.

Kids Restore - Radiata Pine

This week we looked at Pine Tree.  Did you know that the Radiata Pine was introduced to New Zealand in 1859 and is now our most important forestry tree.  At Jack Beer's farm site there is a huge old Pinus Radiata.  It was almost certainly planted by Jack some time before his death in 1930.

We made some creatures from Pine cones and feathers that Mrs Taylor had.  These are just some of them.

Kids Restore - Sandfly

We listened to the seniors tell us about the Maori legend of the God, Tu-te-raki-whanoa.

The god Tu-te-raki-whanoa had just finished creating the landscape of Fiordland, it was absolutely stunning... so stunning that it stopped people from working. They just stood around gazing at the beauty instead. The goddess Hine-nui-te-po became angry at these unproductive people, so she created the sandfly to bite them and get them moving.

They showed us their art work they produced from this legend.

First they dyed the background 3 colours, then they cut the mountains from black paper.  They used some wired to create the big sandfly and black circles made from the holepunch for a smaller sandflies.  Here are some examples of their work.

Commotion in the Ocean

Room 3 have been working on many activities around our Story flight production book, Commotion in the Ocean.

Mrs Taylor helped us to make scuba pictures, and we wrote some stories with Mrs Pearson about what we thought it would be like to dive under the water.

If you look closely you may notice some fish.  As part of our measurement focus, we had to draw a fish 10cm long, using our rulers to help us.
