Pea day

Each week in Room 3 we have a shared poem that we read together.
Last week we read 3 poems all about peas!
On Friday Mrs Pearson brought some fresh and frozen peas to school for us to taste.

Look at Mahana and James counting the peas in the pods before they shelled them.

James held his pea pod up to the light to count the peas inside.
Great idea, James!

Read our pea poems and see if you know them...

The last poem we read was about eating  peas with honey...

Mrs Pearson brought some honey to school and we tasted peas with honey.

Look at Esme, about to try eating her pea with honey.

Look at Brooke looking to see if the honey keeps the peas on her spoon.

Zane was not sure that he liked eating his peas with honey!

Do you like eating peas, and honey?

Have you ever tried eating them together?

Thunder writing

One day last week, before it was time to come to school, there was thunder and lightning in Te Anau.

At draft writing time that day, we all had a story to share about what we had seen and heard that morning.

Mrs Pearson played  sounds of thunder and lightning.  We talked about what the sound of  thunder made us think about.

Here are some of the stories we wrote that day.  Come into Room 3 and read the rest.

What does thunder remind you of?

Write to us and tell us.

Bubblegum writing

We can spell many known words correctly.

We are learning to sound out words we do not know how to write by stretching them out so we can hear all the sounds.

Today we tried to stretch real bubblegum.  (We know this is bad manners, but Mr Excell said we could do it just this once!).

Next we threw our bubblegum out and practiced with a pretend piece of gum.

Look at Cora stretching out words.

We now know that if we have a pretend piece of bubblegum in our pocket, we can spell any word at all.

Maths About Me

* What is your phone number when you add all the numbers up?
* What is your house number?  How many hundreds, tens, ones is this?
* Do you have greater, equal or less sisters to brothers?
* How many pets do you have?  Is this more or less than your friend?
* What time do you go to bed?

We worked together to solve these problems.  It was hard to add up all the numbers in our phone number so we used lots of equipment for this and buddied up.

Welcome to Room 3 2016

Welcome to a new year!  This year we have a straight Year 2 class with 23 lovely children.  We have been busy learning our routines and settling back into school. Last week we looked quickly at Waitangi Day and why it is important to us as New Zealanders, as well as 'All About Me'.  We are starting our Swim for Life program today for 10 days trying to improve on our swimming confidence.

Contraction action

Since the start of the term, we have been learning all about contractions.
This will help us with our reading and writing.
Look at some of the activities we have been doing:

We have been learning this poem:
