Cats belong at home, not in the bush! A cat that has no one to feed and care for will eat a lot of birds and lizards. Even pet cats kill, but not as much as a cat that has to kill to keep itself alive.
The first cats to arrive in New Zealand were ship’s cats. They were kept on sailing ships to catch mice and rats that had stowed away before the ships set sail from their home ports.
The first wild cats were created in the 1830s when batches of cats were released on farmland to control rabbits.
Sometimes people take unwanted cats or kittens away from their homes and let them go in the countryside or bush. This is called dumping. It is cruel to cats and harmful to wildlife and is also illegal.
We made some posters about cats and these are on display at the vet clinic. Here is a small selection of them.
