Kids Restore the Kepler - Rats

This week we have been looking at the pest - rats.  We looked at a stuffed rat - thanks to DOC for the loan of this.  We have a tracking tunnel in our class and next week we are going to use this.  We came up with our own NO RAT signs.

What a view when we are eating lunch

Visiting Mrs Humphries to play music

Last week we walked down to Fiordland College to meet Mrs Humphries.

She is the music teacher, and she invited us to come and look at some musical instruments.  We had a noisy and cheerful time!

We played the keyboards and looked at the inside of a piano.

We discovered that a piano has hammers inside it!  What a surprise!

What is your favourite instrument?
Special thank you to Mrs Humphries for having us to visit!

Kids Restore - Cats

Cats belong at home, not in the bush!  A cat that has no one to feed and care for will eat a lot of birds and lizards.  Even pet cats kill, but not as much as a cat that has to kill to keep itself alive.
The first cats to arrive in New Zealand were ship’s cats.  They were kept on sailing ships to catch mice and rats that had stowed away before the ships set sail from their home ports.
The first wild cats were created in the 1830s when batches of cats were released on farmland to control rabbits.
Sometimes people take unwanted cats or kittens away from their homes and let them go in the countryside or bush.  This is called dumping.  It is cruel to cats and harmful to wildlife and is also illegal.
We made some posters about cats and these are on display at the vet clinic.  Here is a small selection of them.

Weight and Capacity Celebration Video

We finished our Weight and Capacity Unit by having a celebration of our learning.  We had to use the skills that we learnt of measuring and weighing and follow a recipe. We didn't know what our recipes were called so we had to come up with a name at the end.  A big thank you to our wonderful helpers.
Click on the link below to view it -  hope you enjoy it.

Kids Restore - Blackberry

We looked at the Blackberry plant last week and why it was a pest!  We don't like them because they are a friend to stoats, they make great hiding places for them.  Blackberries are yummy though.  We coloured in our own blackberry leaves and added our own creative blackberry.
