Where shall I go to to get the biggest share?

The children had to think about where they wanted to go to get the biggest share of chocolate.  They went up one at a time and sat in front of which chair they wanted to share.
This was half way through the class - Jayden gets one whole chocolate bar, Seth's line has to share 2 bars between 4 and Sophie's line has to share 3 bars between 6.

Where would you go??
At the end!!

Jayden's line has to share one chocolate bar between 5.  They got 1 whole piece and 2/5ths of a piece each.
Seth's line has to share two chocolate bars between 7.  They got 2 whole pieces each.
Sophie's line had to share 3 chocolate bars between 10.  They got 2 whole pieces and 1/10 of a piece.

IF YOU HAD TO JOIN A LINE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

Cassie Duncan's Shortbread Recipe

Room 3 loved the shortbread so much, they wanted the recipe put up on our blog so that they can make it at home.  If you do make it with the children it is a great opportunity to talk about Fractions and Measurement.

Shortbread
250g butter
1/2 C castor sugar
vanilla essence
1/2 C rice flour
1/2 C plain flour

Cream butter and castor sugar together, add enough flour so the dough is not sticky and comes away from the side of the bowl.  Bake in oven at 170 degrees for 30-35 minutes for round shortbread like we did.

Cultures About Us - Scotland

This week we have been looking at Scotland.  We had Calum Duncan come in dressed in his Scottish Kilt.  He showed us lots of things from Scotland, including some money, a dagger, a sporran, and some flags.  He also told us lots of interesting information about Scotland.

Then we had Cassie Duncan come in and take a group to make traditional Scottish Shortbread.

Making Scottish Thistles

This was a bit tricky for some of us, so we had great teamwork to finish them

The finished thistle with our flag of Scotland

Enjoying our Shortbread

We talked about Fractions with our shortbread.  Each circle was cut into eighths and we worked out we needed three circles to have enough for everyone.

African Necklaces

Here are some photos of us making our necklaces and wearing them.

Ashen's Mum is from South Africa

A bag of smiles

The title of one of our shared books last week was 'The bag of smiles' by Joy Cowley.

After reading this story together we talked to a buddy about what makes us smile.

Then we each made our own bag of smiles.

Read what makes Jemima smile.

Come into Room 3 and ask each of us to tell you what you would find in our bag of smiles.

What would you put in your bag of smiles?

If I had a dinosaur....

The title of our shared poem last week was 'If I had a dragon'.

This made us think about what would we do if we had a real dragon.
We talked about this, then wrote some interesting stories.
Here a few of them, come into Room 3 and ask us to share more dragon stories with you.

What would you do if you had a dragon?

Cultures About Us

Our inquiry unit this year is about all the cultures within our school.  We have started off looking at the Cultures within our class.
We have mapped on a world map where our parents/grandparents or maybe our great grandparents have come from.

We have two children who have parents that have come from South Africa, so we have started looking into that culture first.  We have made masks, which we tied into our maths as well talking about halves, symmetry..., we also coloured in our own masks.

We looked at African animals and designed our Zebra portraits using sharpie, dye and paint.

Still to come photos of our - **elephants

Bowl-a-fact

Here's a great game we play in Room 3 when we are learning out facts to 10.
Here is Bella having a great bowl.  She had 10 cups and knocked 7 cups over - how many are left standing?

10-7=3

This is there recorded results
